The shoreline road in Long Beach, circa 1909, was made of crushed oyster shells and sand connecting Pass Christian with Gulfport. The wooden bridge in the foreground spanned Bear Point Bayou, which emptied into the Mississippi Sound.
Hurricane Camille in 1969 claimed 22 Long Beach residents and St. Thomas Catholic Church, which was rebuilt.
In 1925, during a rare snow, brave students from Gulf Park College for Women gathered on the beach for a memorable photograph.
William James Quarles arrived in 1884 to become the first School Teacher, first Postmaster, first General Store owner, first land developer -- and was known as the Catalyst for Long Beach development.
